Writing Prompts: Road Trip

Our image this week is of a classic car. I’d love to be able to tell you the make, model and year of this beauty but my classic car knowledge is too limited. This image was snapped in an underground car park in London near Lord’s Cricket Ground several years ago. The whole car park was full of amazing cars – some classic but mainly super cars – many of which were gathering dust which was a very sad sight to see.

“Alone in the car with my social life all before and behind me, I was suspended in the beautiful solitude of the open road, in a kind of introspection that only outdoor space generates, for inside and outside are more intertwined than the usual distinctions allow. The emotion stirred by the landscape is piercing, a joy close to pain when the blue is deepest on the horizon or the clouds are doing those spectacular fleeting things so much easier to recall than to describe.”

Rebecca Solnit, Wanderlust: A History of Walking

Imagine taking a road trip in a classic car like this. Describe the interior of the car. How it looks, how it feels, how it smells. Give the reader a sense of its history. Where would you go on your road trip? What adventures would you experience? How would the car fare on its journey?
